Portable Flameless heaters have been around for roughly 3 decades, and were primarily used in the oil industry. As of recent years, advances in production and technology have moved this type of heater from a niche product for oilfields to mainstream applications in the construction industry. The systems are portable, highly efficient, and don’t require external power supply, burners or heating elements. In the following paragraphs, we will explain this revolutionary heating technology including suitable applications, and well as the benefits of employing flameless heaters.
Let’s start by explaining how the technology works. The heating unit consists of an engine(also called a power plant), a radiator fan, hydraulic oil turbulator, fuel-delivery system, and in some instances a secondary blower fan used for ducting applications. The components are contained inside of an insulated chamber. The engine powers all of functions of the heater. Once the engine is activated, the following sequence happens:
- Engine activates, begins producing exhaust, as well as heat from the engine combustion
- Exhaust is captured in a piping system that is looped on the inlet air of the machine
- Radiator fan is activated pulling air across the looped exhaust pipe to capture heat, the pipe exhausts products of combustion out of the top of the machine
- Radiator fan blows air across the engine block, picking up additional heat
- Engine helps turn a shaft/enclosed plate system with hydraulic fluid, agitates hydraulic fluid with shaft and internal impeller.
- The agitated oil generates heat through friction, which produces the largest percentage of heat relative to other components
- The agitated oil moves through a finned system contained in the air discharge, and a second blower discharges the air through a duct opening.

Benefits of Portable Flameless Heaters
Flameless heaters are highly efficient, typically ranging from 90-94%. Efficiency is rated on how effectively every bit of fuel consumed is actually converted into usable heat. The design of the technology ensures clean combustion free air is delivered, similar to indirect-fired heaters, but far more efficient. This means that your overall fuel cost will be lower because of the efficiency. Other benefits of portable flameless heaters are as follows:
-No external power supply required
-Variable airflow and variable heat capability, allows one system to be suitable for heating a small structure to a large structure
-On-board and external thermostat controls allows for maintaining temperature control in the space and heater discharge. You can control the heater output, unlike indirect-fired heaters.
